The Effects of Group Mental Health Education on knowledge of Substance Abuse, ADHD, Depression, and Anxiety in Middle school students

Abstract
Purpose : This study was aimed to investigate the effects of group mental health education for two middle school students being resided in G city. Subjects : The participants of the study were 461 students who were 2nd grades in middle school.

Method : Group mental health educations were conducted by one 45-minute-session per week during 7 weeks. Data were collected from Mar. 30, 2005 to Dec. 18, 2005 using the knowledge questionnaires of substance abuse, ADHD, depression, anxiety. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS of window version 12.0.
The results of this study were as follows :
1) There was a significant difference in mean score of the knowledge of substance abuse, ADHD, depression, anxiety after receiving group mental health education.
2) Before taking mental health education, there were no significant differences in all of the general characteristics.
3) After taking mental health education, there were significant differences in sex according to the knowledge of substance abuse, ADHD and anxiety. There were significant differences in the knowledge of depression according to economic status and in the knowledge of ADHD according to living with parents
4) In the satisfaction of education program, the level of knowledge- understanding about the education was 2.98, the education content was 2.84, the level of Self-understanding was 2.76, the level of lecturer¡¯s ambition was 2.67, the duration of education was 2.65 and the confidence of managing mental health was 2.629 in order.
5) The best interesting education was ADHD 37.6%, substance abuse 27.3%, depression 22.0%, anxiety 13.1% in order.

Conclusion£º It seems that mental health education should be considered for mental health in middle school students. As a results, this study suggests that continuous structured systematic education should be applied for maintaining knowledge and improving mental health management and Modifications to the current program would be required to give best effect.
